New Helieon Update

So, while things have been relatively quiet on the LED front, Bridgelux anf Molex seem to have been busy creating a new version of their Helieon platform.

The original version was an attempt to create a simple to replace module that was independant from the fixture it was mounted to, so the LED light engine could be replaced as required, whether it be for repair, or to be upgraded with a newer, or higher output engine.

The latest version is dubbed the Helieon 120V AC, and looks to remove the requirement for an external driver. The Helieon page doesn't really explain things very well, but the Bridgelux press release tells us that the driver electronics are now directly integrated into the unit, which would explain the new larger housing.

While this is currently directed towards the general lighting market, this would be a great platform to use in the aquarium world. For freshwater, the applications are obvious, seeing as Bridgelux' LED lineup would work wonderfully for the planted tank world. Options may be limited for the reefing end of things, seeing as Bridgelux hasn't offered anything but white options up to this point. If only Bridgelux would see it in their right mind to come up with a nice royal blue LED :)
